Stop This Train

So it is no secret that 2009 was not a good year for me, there were several deaths and a lot of boredom/unhappiness going on.  2010 is thus far shaping up to be a hell of a lot better.  I am already lined up to see three of my top five musicians and two of my best friends who I very rarely get to see, I’ve got a day of London day of culture with Kate Erring lined up based around the theme of surrealism and there are some movies that I really want to see coming out.  In short it feels like 2010 will be a good year for me.

However I am also going to be 25 this year which frankly terrifies me. I know it’s not that old but I had always assumed that by the time I was 25 I would have my life far more together. I’ve done a lot, I have a degree, I’ve travelled the world, I’ve had insane, amazing and inspirational experiences but my life is far from together.  I was listening to a John Mayer song last night (he’s one of the top five) and the lyrics totally struck a cord, to me it’s about how fast life moves and wishing that you could just stop for a while and avoid the inevitable passage of time but of course the inevitable is impossible to avoid and you might as well just embrace it.
Anyway, enough of my interpretation, here you go:

No I’m not color blind
I know the world is black and white
Try to keep an open mind but…
I just can’t sleep on this tonight
Stop this train I want to get off and go home again
I can’t take the speed it’s moving in
I know I can’t
But honestly won’t someone stop this train

Don’t know how else to say it, don’t want to see my parents go
One generation’s length away
From fighting life out on my own

Stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can’t take the speed it’s moving in
I know I can’t but honestly won’t someone stop this train

So scared of getting older
I’m only good at being young
So I play the numbers game to find away to say that life has just begun
Had a talk with my old man
Said help me understand
He said turn 68, you’ll renegotiate
Don’t stop this train
Don’t for a minute change the place you’re in
Don’t think I couldn’t ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly we’ll never stop this train

See once in a while when it’s good
It’ll feel like it should
And they’re all still around
And you’re still safe and sound
And you don’t miss a thing
’til you cry when you’re driving away in the dark.

Singing stop this train I want to get off and go home again
I can’t take this speed it’s moving in
I know I can’t
Cause now I see I’ll never stop this train

John Mayer
